| Welcome! Thanks for signing up and joining the conversation on race, identity and culture in Houston. You'll soon receive our newsletter in your inbox. Maybe you're here to connect with the rich, colorful narratives of your community, or want to get engaged and mobilize on issues that affect marginalized and underrepresented groups. Or, maybe you're just curious to learn a thing or two about your neighbors. Whatever the reason, we're happy to have you on board as we spotlight the stories behind America's most diverse city.
From boots to saris to screw music, from tamales to suya to Viet-Cajun crawfish, Houston is an experience sprawled out in swampy Southeast Texas. The city can't be defined (it can't even be zoned); as a nearly-decadelong Houston transplant who grew up in Midland, spent summers and my college years in Dallas and worked in newspapers in Waco and San Antonio, I've found I have a hard time explaining to non-Houstonians and non-Texans exactly who Houston is. I think it's well past time to let the folks who make Houston the city of the future speak for themselves.
