Welcome to The Food Corner. Every Tuesday we'll be using this space to share news about Houston's food scene and restaurant recommendations. If you've eaten anything delicious recently, hit reply and let me know where you had it and what you liked about it. Let's get started.
From the Chronicle:
Alison Cook returned to Taste of Texas recently after several decades. She found the steak house "is more about a feeling than the food," but "the grill guys clearly know what they're doing." Read her full review here.
ICYMI: These are 20 of the most important restaurants that opened in 2022. From new outposts by major players including Goode Company and Mala Sichuan to splashy high-end concepts such as Ciel and Zanti Cucina, they're all worth a visit. Read the full list here.
From you:
Chris H. recommends 1751 Sea and Bar, which made the Chronicle's Top 100 Restaurants list. From his review:
"Just outrageously good service & food. For appetizers, we ordered the grilled oysters (yuzu Béarnaise was buttery, silky and great), a Caesar salad (anchovy and the parmesan cheese for super flavorful), Texas Quail (tender but still enough bite along with a tasty cranberry glaze) and an out of sight Shrimp cocktail (house atomic cocktail sauce should be bottled & sold). For the main course, I got the crispy-skin snapper which was done so well (crispy skin but soft, flaky inside). The topper was the steamed Alaskan king crab!! Holy crap, it was amazing. Super sweet & buttery and steamed to perfection."
Jerry C. recently went to Hidden Omakase (which is very high on my list of places I would like to go). He writes a succinct but very compelling review:
"I have never had such a delicious meal in my life, and truly don't believe we will ever top that one."
Cat's pick: When I visited Seattle this fall, I stumbled into a tiny coffee shop. My go-to coffee order is a black Americano, but I ordered their Autumn Latte, as it seemed a fitting order on a day when the ground was covered in red and orange leaves. It was full of all the spices you might associate with a fall day, and I have been craving it ever since.
I finally found something that is nearly its equal at Blacksmith Coffee — their current seasonal drink, the Maple Ginger Latte. It's full of warming spices that compliment, rather than overpower, the taste of the coffee and just a hint of sweetness. I highly recommend treating yourself to a cup during this week's cold spell.
