| When Seth Davis signed his letter of intent with Mississippi State on Wednesday, it was about more than just football. It was about honoring the man who gave him a chance. Bulldogs coach Mike Leach died at age 61 on Dec. 12, a little more than a week before the start of the NCAA early signing period. For Davis — who finished his high school career as the all-time leading rusher at Katy — there was no doubt about where he wanted to play his college ball. He committed to Leach in May, and his pledge has only strengthened. "It just motivated me more for going to Mississippi State to honor him," Davis told the Chronicle on Tuesday evening. "He was one of the coaches who took a chance on me, and he believed in me, so I'm just going there to honor him, and that's what all the other recruits are doing, too." Three Signing Day takeaways Robust receiver class: Several highly-touted receivers from the Houston area made their commitments official on Wednesday, including Humble playmaker Tyrone West, who signed with Texas Tech. Marcus Gutierrez spoke with West about his future and examined the rest of the top pass-catchers for the 2023 class, a group that also includes the likes of Eisenhower's Ryan Niblett and Dekaney's Jonah Wilson. Leaving Texas: Kinkaid cornerback Micah Bell is widely considered the top private school football player in the Houston area. The four-star recruit signed with Notre Dame and is one of several notable local recruits leaving the Lone Star State to continue their college careers. He follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Dillon, who plays receiver for defending national champion Georgia. List of signees: Players all around the Houston area made their dreams reality Wednesday during the first day of the NCAA early signing period. Jack Marrion compiled a list of those players, organized by high school. Follow all our coverage at houstonchronicle.com/highschoolsports. |
