| Wednesday brought one of college football's most anticipated days: The start of the early signing period. UH, in its first signing class before joining the Big 12, officially added quarterback transfer Donovan Smith as part of a signing class inked for a step up in competition. Texas A&M added some needed offensive playmakers, albeit still without a coordinator on board. Texas, meanwhile, put the finishing touches on a top-five class that was jump-started by top national recruit Arch Manning coming on board. Rice coach Mike Bloomgren finally got his man, the well-traveled QB J.T. Daniels, as part of the Owls' haul. Locally, a slew of receivers signed with Power 5 programs, with Humble's Tyrone West heading to Texas Tech. Kinkaid's Micah Bell highlighted a wave of locals opting for out-of-state programs. Katy's Seth Davis honored the late Mike Leach by honoring his commitment to Mississippi State. Click here to see where other local gridiron stars landed. The Rockets' offense was rolling Wednesday night. Then the Magic went into a zone defense and Houston never recovered, blowing a 15-point lead in the second half en route to its fourth straight loss. Third-ranked UH barely broke a sweat in romping past McNeese in the Cougars' nonconference basketball finale. The winds of change are blowing for Houston's pro soccer franchises under owner Ted Segal, writes Brian T. Smith. Veteran Sam Laity takes over the Dash after a playoff campaign that featured three coaches. Michael Brantley's return was made official by the Astros. Why they feel the veteran outfielder could be worth up to $16 million in 2023. The Texans will again try to slow down Titans running back Derrick Henry, who's had their number the past few seasons. Stat of the day: 4. Fouls committed by UH in Wednesday's win, a single-game low in program history. The previous record was five against St. Mary's on Dec. 12, 1966. |
