In today's edition of Election Tuesdays, we chatted with Luke Macias, a conservative activist and the director of the far-right Defend Texas Liberty PAC.
After spending millions in the primary to elect more conservative Republicans — and with little to show for it — the PAC released an ad last week urging Texans to vote Republican down ballot.
Q: Is this a moment of unity for you, asking Republicans to put aside their ideological differences and make sure that GOP candidates are elected this fall?
A: I think we're focused from now until November on electing Republicans across the board, because we know that the stronger a Republican majority we are able to achieve, the more likely we'll be able to pass conservative policies...
I think one of the reasons why you have several liberal Republicans defecting this election cycle is because so many Republican policies are starting to get passed into law, and they're concerned that more will be passed into law if we elect a strong Republican majority.
Q: It seems like some Republicans are avoiding discussing a handful of conservative priorities on the campaign trail, such as abortion or school vouchers. Are you also getting that sense?
A: There are different issues that will come up in the last 30 days. The Democrats are trying to make the next 30 days all about abortion. Unfortunately for them, most voters outside of the Democrat Party are not significantly motivated on that issue — they're really talking to their base. Republicans need to focus on messages that have broader appeal, and we understand that, but we also know which Republicans actually do intend to push Republican policies. |
