Harris County judge race in dead heat, UH poll shows |
If you read one thing: A new poll of Harris County voters showed that Lina Hidalgo and Alexandra del Moral Mealer were neck and neck in the race for county judge. What does the poll show? The poll, conducted by the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston, shows that Mealer, a Republican, is winning 47 percent of likely voters over Democratic incumbent Hidalgo's 45 percent. The margin of error in the poll is 3.9 percent, and 8 percent of likely voters were still undecided. According to the poll, that suggests the race is effectively tied in regard to how Harris County's likely voters intend to vote. Does the poll suggest what voters care about? Forty percent of voters said crime/public safety was the most important issue in their decision, compared to 13 percent who listed abortion, and 11 percent who listed voting rights. Both candidates have addressed crime and public safety in their campaigns. Mealer has made crime the central focus of her campaign by promising to add 1,000 new law enforcement officers if Republicans win the majority. Hidalgo cites a decline in violent crime since the beginning of 2022 and points to Harris County's unfilled law enforcement positions as evidence that the new positions will never be filled. What about ethnicity? Fifty-six percent of white voters said they plan on voting for Mealer. The race is neck and neck among Latino voters, and 73 percent of Black voters support Hidalgo. One more thing: The poll also indicated that the county's $1.2 billion bond proposals, supported by county Democrats and opposed by Republicans, could pass a referendum in the November election. | Melissa Hall/Courtesy to the Chronicle |
Above is a cropped photo of the bar at the Grand Galvez. The image in the window is allegedly a ghost.
Five Houston restaurants and bars appear on Yelp's "Top Haunted Restaurants & Bar in Texas" list this year. Each spot has a storied history behind it, and as the Chronicle's John-Henry Perera writes, "while some of the tales are fascinating, others are considerably macabre and, sometimes, a little distressing." If you dare, check out what spots made the list — don't be afraid to get a little spooky. |
Report: Nearly 70% of LGBTQ students feel unsafe at school |
If you read one thing: Schools remain a hostile place for LGBTQ students, according to a new report from the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network. What did the report find? The report found a decline in access to resources, books, and supportive clubs for LGBTQ students, and that nearly 70 percent of them felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. More than 78 percent said they avoided school functions or extracurricular activities because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable. The organization surveyed 22,000 students between the ages of 13 and 21 for the most recent report. More than 76 percent of the students were verbally harassed, 31 percent were physically harassed and more than 12 percent were physically assaulted based on their sexual orientation or gender expression. What can be done? The organization that authored the report recommended that schools increase student access to appropriate and accurate LGBTQ resources, support student clubs, provide professional development to school staff, ensure that policies do not discriminate against LGBTQ students and create policies that ban harassment or bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity. One more thing: Students in the South were least likely to have access to LGBTQ resources at school and had more negative school experiences, according to the report. |

Nearly 140 cats rescued from waste-filled house |
If you read one thing: Nearly 140 cats and a handful of dogs were removed from a woman's home in Sugar Land's Lakefield subdivision. The situation came to light a few days ago when a relative of the woman called 311. The animals' owner had been hospitalized, and the relative had gone over to look after the pets. What was it like in the home? Animal control officers entered the home and were immediately overwhelmed by a strong odor of ammonia. Feces and urine were everywhere, and the house had suffered significant damage. How were the animals? A few of the animals were spayed or neutered and many cats were found to be pregnant. A few dead cats were found and many were sick, malnourished and in need of care. The cats ranged from tiny newborn kittens to adult cats. A temporary animal shelter has been set up to house and treat the animals in Duhacsek Park. The city has issued an urgent plea for help, asking people to either temporarily foster or adopt the animals in the Sugar Land Animal Shelter. One more thing: The situation was hidden from neighbors, as the house was located in a two-story, oversized-lot house located in a nice area. There had been no noise or odor complaints from neighbors. |

I am a huge sports fan and my favorite sport is basketball. I don't have an absoulte favorite team but it has been fun rooting for the Rockets, despite their recent struggles. I agree with Chronicle columnist Jerome Solomon that the Rockets are much better than last year and are entertaining and competitive. If you find time between the Astros, and, well, the Texans, be sure to check them out! Cat DeLaura is coming back tomorrow and I will be back on my regular trending news beat. Until next time...
