Autumn has been my favorite season since I was a kid. It evokes fond memories of playing outside in cooler weather, dressing up for Halloween, and goofing off at the kid's table during Thanksgiving. But nothing triggers fall-stalgia for me quite like a pumpkin patch. So, when I read David Taylor's article about Crosby United Methodist Church receiving 40,000 pounds of pumpkins for their patch this year, my interest was piqued. In the article, he provides several interesting little-known facts about pumpkins and gourds. For example, have you ever wondered why some have wart-like bumps? According to Kandace Lea, wife of Crosby UMC's pastor, the bumps are caused by excess sugar. These pumpkins have a sweet flavor and are good to use for cooking. The pumpkin patch will be open through the end of the month. On Oct. 29, the community is invited to attend the church's Harvest Moon Festival offering fun activities, treats, and the chance to build happy memories with family.
