The team at McCord Development announced on Tuesday they were including a world-class surf park in their entertainment portfolio at Generation Park. This is big news for the east side of the county. For years, we've all watched and mildly applauded as other parts of town grew and saw nice state-of-the-art facilities land in their jurisdiction. That's no longer the case. The northeast quadrant of the county is experiencing growth and attracting some of those nice amenities, and it doesn't appear to be slowing down. McCord has contracted with Beach Street Development to build the six-acre lagoon on a 15-acre lot beginning this winter. They're already doing dirt work preparing for construction. I can't even imagine 6.9 million gallons of water that they'll use to fill the lagoon! At this point, no one knows the economic impact the resort will have on the community, but it should be big. With the proximity of IAH-Bush Airport being only 10-minutes or so from Generation Park, it will not only attract regional enthusiasts, but national and international barefoot surfers. Out-of-towners will eat at our restaurants, sleep in our motels, and patronize our area retailers. I've never surfed before, but if it has that kind of impact, I might be shopping for a surfboard. Okay, at least some new board shorts. Tell me some of your surf stories at dtaylor@hcnonline.com. |
