| NASA has gone full Michael Bay and launched an assault on a meteor, my coworker Juhi Varma has reported. On Monday, an unmanned robotic NASA spacecraft was deliberately slammed into Dimorphos, an asteroid moonlet, in an attempt to knock the giant space rock off course. The unsuspecting meteor is not a threat to the planet, according to scientists, but it's always a good idea to know if slap-shotting an asteroid is within our technological capabilities. There is no word yet as to whether or not Aerosmith provided the soundtrack for the launch. All "Armageddon" jokes aside, I think this mission is pretty impressive, and I'm interested to see if the endeavor is a success. Given that meteors have a tendency to cause mass-extinction, efforts like this definitely give me a sense of security. What are your thoughts on NASA's mission to swat away asteroids? Are you as fascinated as I am? Let me know your opinion at claire.goodman@chron.com. |
