Old Sacramento gets $5 million in security upgrades – While the Sacramento City Council approved the use of American Rescue Funds to improve security at the historic shopping plaza, small business owners call it merely a "Band-Aid." The area saw multiple shootings throughout the summer, keeping customers and workers alike on edge. Mayor Darrell Steinberg on Tuesday called the multi-million dollar investment a comeback for the tourist attraction – a "real shot in the arm." He said security improvements include expanded camera use and more flexibility for street and alley closures. (Lena Howland, ABC10) Paid parking meters are replacing free parking in Sacramento – Because of a shortage on public parking, the City Council voted Tuesday to repeal the measure allowing for free parking after 4:30 p.m. every weekday, and all day on weekends. Free parking is hurting businesses because once-fast turnover spots are filling up. Speed lumps are also coming in, which are smaller and more affordable than traditional speed bumps. (Carley Gomez, ABC10) White House rolls out vaccine plan for children 5 to 11 – Biden administration officials announced elementary school-aged kids will soon be authorized to take the Pfizer vaccine. In a matter of weeks, White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients said, students can expect to receive their first vaccine dose with a pediatrician, pharmacy and potentially school campuses. Federal regulators will meet to weigh the benefits of immunizing kids, after lengthy studies meant to ensure the safety of the vaccines.
