Lawsapalooza | Here's a list of new laws Gov. Newsom recently signed – Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a handful of bills Friday as the last day for him to sign or veto bills passed by the Legislature approaches Sunday. The new laws consist of: Ethnic studies now being a high school requirement, the state will now ease gang enhanced sentence rules, menstrual products will now be required in public schools, you'll be able to order cocktails-to-go in California from now until 2026, the state extended tax on phones to fund high-speed internet, some parents are now able to join their adult children's health insurance plan, there are new law limits for workplace secret settlements, the bill to pay people to stay sober was vetoed by the governor, the bill to decriminalize jaywalking was rejected, and the state added 'ghost guns' to violence prevention orders. (Associated Press, Staff at ABC10) Red Flag Warnings | National Weather Service launches a new category: 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' – People have seen how explosive fires like the Camp, Carr, Tubbs, Dixie and North Complex develop so quickly that it leaves people little time to escape. Even though Red Flag Warnings are issued in many cases, it's still hard to imagine something overtaking a town or area in just hours. But the frequency of these events has gone up over the last decade. The National Weather Service is launching a new way to warn us of particularly dangerous fire situations for potential explosive, fast-moving fires that may result in little evacuation time. (Monica Woods, ABC10) 'The buck stops with me' | Sacramento Mayor Steinberg responds to homeless camp cleanups while shelters are full – On September 29th, Caltrans bulldozers pushed tents, beds and coolers aside as folks who lived there watched from the other side of W and 9th. The same thing happened six days later near 29th and F streets under Capital City Freeway, but each person being removed that ABC10 spoke with had the same question. "Where do we go?" Jason Sloan, a man experiencing homelessness said after receiving notice by Caltrans to vacate the area. No officials seem to have answers for that, as city shelters are all at capacity. As of October 8, Caltrans delayed plans to remove by Oct. 15 the homeless encampments beneath where I-80 and Capital City Freeway split, just east of Watt Avenue. (Lena Howland, ABC10) TIP OF THE DAYIs it safe to trick-or-treat this year?...Dr. Anthony Fauci says families can feel safe trick-or-treating outdoors this year for Halloween as COVID-19 cases in the U.S. decline, especially for those who are vaccinated. (Associated Press) SMILEGeorgia woman gives back to child cancer patients with scarves...Courtney Buchanan started her silk scarf business, CB Grey, right in the middle of the pandemic with a newborn, a sick mom, and COVID-19 to deal with.
