As pandemic deepens hunger, Feed Sacramento Homeless takes on the charge – The pandemic has deepened the hunger crisis, and the people who are hit the hardest are the unhoused community. One in five California households experiences food insecurity, according to the California Association of Food Banks. But what about the unhoused community? "Due to the pandemic, many people have lost their homes and more people are becoming unhoused and that forces us to provide more meals," said President of Feed Sacramento Homeless Bobbi Wooten. In 2020, Feed Sacramento Homeless provided 1,000 meals per week when California was on lockdown because of COVID-19, Wooten said. (Eden Harris, ABC10) Parents protest California's COVID vaccine requirement for students in Modesto – Outside of the Stanislaus County Office of Education on Wednesday, hundreds of families protested California's vaccine mandate that would require eligible schoolchildren to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The protest happened at the corner of H and 11th streets in Modesto. People were seen holding signs and honking horns in support of those opposing the mandate. One mother at the protest came out from Mariposa with her two children. She said she was out in protest to support her right as a parent to make medical decisions for her minor children. (Kurt Rivera, ABC10) Newsom signs bills aimed at reducing plastic use – Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation Tuesday aimed at clearing up some of the confusion and reducing plastic pollution. The head of the Recycling Commission, Heidi Sanborn, said no amount of education can combat the amount of misinformation on plastic products. For example, she said Red Solo Cups have a recycle logo right on the bottom of them, but you can’t actually recycle this type of plastic in California. Plastic bags are another example. All plastic grocery store bags have a recycle logo on them, but you can't stick them in your recycling bin. They clog up the sorting machines. (Morgan Rynor, ABC10) TIP OF THE DAY When will COVID vaccines start for kids?...The FDA will have to decide if there’s enough evidence that the shots are safe and will work for younger children like they do for teens and adults. An independent expert panel will publicly debate the evidence on Oct. 26. (Lauran Neergaard, AP) SMILE Father travels barefoot to raise awareness, funds for his daughter's rare condition...The long hike is all to bring attention to the rare disease journey.
