How a good 'perfect storm' helped save South Lake Tahoe – After burning for weeks and destroying hundreds of homes, the Caldor Fire burned up Highway 50 toward Echo Summit and roared into the Lake Tahoe Basin. The locals of South Lake Tahoe prepared to watch the fire ravage their homes, but their worst fears did not come true. Instead of burning up Christmas Valley to the South of town, the fire jumped over it. (1) The wind blew perpendicular to the Valley. (2) A small army of firefighters worked hard down in the valley. (3) People had days of advance warning that the Caldor Fire could run toward the basin. (Brandon Rittiman, ABC10) Sacramento gas prices soar to highest average price in 9 years over Labor Day weekend – Gas prices have soared to new heights for the Sacramento region on Labor Day weekend with an average of $4.35 per gallon, according to AAA. That's the highest they've been since March of 2012. According to AAA, gas prices in the Sacramento area are the highest they've been since March of 2012. "When demand is high, when crude oil is high, that leads to extra high gas prices, and that trend kind of continued from March until about now" Sergio Avilia, a spokesperson for AAA Northern California, said. (Lena Howland, ABC10) Federal pandemic funds end, but could be silver lining for businesses needing employees – Other enhanced benefits during the pandemic, such as extended benefit programs and coverage for people who don't normally qualify also expired. It impacts 2.2 million people in California. However, the end of the benefits could be a silver lining for restaurants and businesses desperate to fill positions. When California reopened in June, the iconic Chuck's restaurant on Pacific Avenue in Stockton had lost a third of their workers. Owner Steve Grant said now he is fully staffed, but noted that about half of his workers have little or no experience.
