Highway 50 reopens to Caldor Fire evacuees – A stretch of Highway 50 that's been closed for weeks finally reopened on Monday, but just for residents, business owners, and certain commercial vehicles. In order to access the area between Kyburz and Meyers, residents will need to show proof of residency and get a permit from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department. Cal Fire asks that those residents with a permit traveling through the area be cautious of fire personnel and heavy equipment and proceed with care. "We will allow the general public starting at 8 am on Tuesday but at 8 a.m. on Monday, we will allow residents to come back through with identification of residency and also goods and services,” says Angela DaPrado, a public information officer with CalTrans. But when Gabby's family stopped hearing from her, they knew something was wrong. Now police across the country are searching for the missing North Port woman after they say Laundrie returned home from the trip without her. The contractor had enough time to do some quick research and decided to wrap his mountain home with an aluminum protective covering. The material that can withstand intensive heat for short periods resembles tin foil from the kitchen drawer but is modeled after the tent-like shelters that wildland firefighters use as a last resort to protect themselves when trapped by flames. “It’s pretty expensive, and you’d feel stupid if they stopped the fire before it got close,” he said. “But I’m really glad we did it."
