First flames, then fees: Tahoe evacuees report price-gouging – The threat the Caldor Fire poses to Lake Tahoe residents is exposing differences between laws against price-gouging in Nevada and California. While California prohibits exorbitant price increases during emergencies, a ban that Nevada lawmakers passed this year doesn't take effect until October. Evacuees are reporting rideshare companies quoting trips from area ski resorts to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport at eight times the normal rate and hotels on the Nevada side of the resort town hiked room rates to nearly $450 per night. Stanislaus County re-instates indoor mask mandate as COVID-19 infections spike – Stanislaus County is reinstating its indoor mask mandate as coronavirus infections continue to surge upward. The order goes into effect on Saturday, Sept. 4. The order applies to everyone in the county regardless of vaccination status, according to the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency. Health officials say it is the “least disruptive and most immediately impactful” step to try to curb COVID infections. (Matthew Nuttle, ABC10)

600 Sacramento Valley doctors plea for people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 – A letter signed by more than 600 doctors from the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society (SSVMS) made an urgent plea for people to get vaccinated. "We ask this from the bottom of our hearts," the medical society said in a letter. The letter described the 600 doctors as physicians, neighbors, friends and relatives who love the region and want to see a "COVID-free future." "You've trusted us with every other aspect of your health. Please trust us with this." (Eric Escalante, ABC10)
