Caldor Fire 'historic,' unlike anything seen before, South Lake Tahoe fire chief says – Officials in the city of South Lake Tahoe Fire say the mega-drought, climate change, and unpredictable winds have made the Caldor Fire, unlike any other wildfire they have seen before. South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Clive Savacool said over the last five to 10 years the fires have gotten worse and worse. The drought is also a major factor. It has made all the vegetation burn, so when firefighters go to fight it, it’s the reason the dozer lines won't hold, according to fire officials. (Monica Coleman, ABC10) Memorial fund created in honor of fallen Galt police officer – A memorial fund has been started to support the family of Officer Harminder Grewal who died from injuries he suffered in a serious head-on crash while he was on his way to help respond to the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County. The Galt Police Department is asking anyone who wishes to support Officer Harminder Grewal's family to donate to a memorial fund that was created in Officer Grewal's honor. It was set up through CAHP Credit Union. (Staff at ABC10)
Stanislaus County firefighter hospitalized with 2nd, 3rd degree burns after battling Caldor Fire – West Stanislaus Fire Officer District Chief Jeff Gregory confirmed with ABC10 that firefighter Richard Gerety has a long road to recovery after suffering severe burns on roughly 20% of his body while fighting the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County. Gerety was injured on Aug. 28 while part of a strike team fighting the northeast section of the fire. Gerety is expected to undergo skin grafting on Sept. 1 and could be in the hospital for at least a month. Gregory said the injured firefighter is in good spirits and also receiving good care. (Eric Escalante, ABC10) TIP OF THE DAYBe an Airbnb host for wildfire evacuees...Anyone with an entire home or apartment can become a host and provide temporary housing to relief workers and people displaced by the California wildfires. (Staff at ABC10) SMILESimone Biles gives Suni Lee's father an electric wheelchair... John Lee, who cheered his daughter on at the Olympics, has been using a manual wheelchair to get around since an accident two years ago. (Val Lick, KARE) ROB CARLMARK'S WEATHER FORECASTWildfires and the intense heat associated with these types of fires can send burning embers up into the air. Hot embers can travel several blocks, even miles, in the wind and are the most common way that houses catch fire. Keeping your property and roof clear of debris and gutters clean with a covered gutter system can prevent an ember from igniting a home. Installing a Byers LeafGuard Gutter System will ensure that leaves, sticks and debris won't build up in your gutters ever again. Visit ThatsByers.com for more information. Sponsored by Byers. |
