Dixie Fire destroys much of California Gold Rush town – A fast-moving wildfire has engulfed a Northern California town, leveling much of the downtown and several homes. The Dixie Fire tore through Greenville on Wednesday evening, destroying businesses and homes in the community that dates to the Gold Rush. A photographer on assignment for The Associated Press has been in the town of 800 people, where a gas station, hotel and local bar were among many buildings burned to the ground. The 3-week-old fire has grown to over 435 square miles. To the south, homes and other structures burned in the fast-moving River Fire that broke out Wednesday near Colfax. (Associated Press) Republicans aim at GOP base in 1st California recall debate – Four Republican candidates skirmished in their first debate as they head toward California's Sept. 14 recall election that could remove Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom from office. The two best known candidates — Caitlyn Jenner and conservative talk radio host Larry Elder — weren't participating. The four candidates — U.S. Rep. Doug Ose, John Cox, Kevin Kiley and Kevin Faulconer — kept much of their criticism focused on Newsom while attempting to distinguish themselves from their rivals. The televised debate at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in Orange County, California, represented a chance for the candidates to connect with voters statewide. (Associated Press & Matthew Nuttle, ABC10) Sacramento unveils master plan to address homelessness – Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg unveiled his $100 million plan to tackle the homeless crisis on Wednesday. It includes 20 new sites for shelters, six motel conversions and one large campus. He's also working to convert six motels into housing and, long term, he's working with the county to develop one large campus meant to serve as a one-stop shop. He said his plan has the ability to serve 9,820 people every year. Joseph Smith, advocacy director for Loaves and Fishes, said this plan is an effective first step forward. "To have that safe space to call home where you can leave your stuff and not having to worry about it getting thrown away or stolen, just to have that security, it's been a long time coming for everybody, and this is a great first step, I think, to offering folks a little security," Smith said. (Eden Harris & Lena Howland, ABC10) TIP OF THE DAYBooster shot likely this winter... Moderna believes a booster shot will be "necessary prior to the winter season." However, public health officials have said that they do not believe Americans need a booster at this time, despite the highly contagious delta variant fueling the surge. (Erin McHugh, Associated Press) SMILESmile for the underwater camera... A fish with multiple rows of human-like teeth was caught in North Carolina earlier in the week, lighting up social media and no doubt haunting the dreams of many who gazed into its toothy maw. The sheepshead uses its human-like incisors and molars to crush its food, which is typically shellfish and crustaceans. (Tegna) |
