Elk Grove mother mourns loss of 10-year-old son – An Elk Grove mother is searching for answers after the unexpected death of her 10-year-old son. On July 12, Peerless Turner died in the early morning at the hospital after spending the night at his grandmother's house in Natomas. "He went to sleep and didn't wake up," said Ayriana Lambert, mother of Turner. "The hospital tried, the paramedics tried, my dad tried, and my aunt tried to save him." Even though Turner tested positive for COVID-19, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office said the cause of death is still undetermined at this time. It could take up to four months to determine the cause of death and to determine whether COVID-19 played a role. "This was totally unexpected," Lambert said. "There were no signs. That was his second time testing positive. His first positive was in December of 2020." (Kandace Redd, ABC10) Sacramento businesses asking customers to mask up – Capital Books is one of many businesses in Sacramento that are asking people to wear a mask before they go inside due to the rise in cases of the Delta variant. "We still require masks mostly because we have a lot of families that come in under 12. That's kind of one of our triggers because they can't get vaccinated," Ross Rojek, owner of Capital Books, said. On K Street in Sacramento when you enter his book store, you are greeted by a sign that reads "because we have families with yet to be vaccinated children we still require that everyone entering wear a mask that covers both mouth and nose." Rojek said he knows of two customers dying from COVID-19 and just recently had a four-year-old customer get sick from the virus. "One of our customers... was doing story time with us and had to skip last week because she ended up with COVID. She sick was pretty hard for over a week, so it's things like that that we know are going on." (Monica Coleman, ABC10) San Joaquin County Fairgrounds targeted for affordable housing development – "This is a significant investment in Stockton," Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln said. The project falls under Gov. Gavin Newsom's Excess Land for Affordable Housing Executive Order, which plans to set aside 110 of the 250 acres of fairground land and turn it into affordable and mixed use housing. Stockton is short 24,000 affordable and available rental homes, according to Gustavo Velasquez, director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development. Lincoln added he's excited about the development and wants it to be what he calls an "ecosystem of housing." "We know it's going to spawn more economic opportunity in the periphery as well and even in that particular location with certain commercial, recreational opportunities that could be invested there," Lincoln said. (Kurt Rivera, ABC10) TIP OF THE DAYSan Joaquin County health officials want residents to mask up again... The recommendation comes after the San Joaquin County Health Department reports coronavirus infections have more than doubled since July 1. Because of that, they want all residents, vaccinated or not, to mask up. (Matthew Nuttle, ABC10) SMILE |
