By Atlas & Boots on Jan 27, 2021 09:00 am From a cross-country road trip in a hostile America to boundless sand dunes in remote China, our crop of adventure travel books 2021 have one thing in common: their journeys are more than just physical. There are tales of derring-do, but beyond the sparkly appeal of adventure are stories of recovery, rebirth and the healing power of nature. In Nepal, one man re-attempts Everest after a lethal earthquake. In the UK, another walks back from the brink of suicide while, in the US, a woman emerges from a three-year battle with leukemia. Ultimately, these are tales of not just exploration and adventure but of courage, curiosity, resilience and hope. Mark Twain once remarked, "In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six kinds of weather inside of four and twenty hours." Here in the UK spring weather so often described as "mixed" or "unpredictable" essentially includes anything from perfect hillwalking conditions with blue skies, sunshine and a cooling breeze to treacherous conditions laden with mud, stormy skies and gale-force winds is forecast. As I prepare for my first outdoor expedition of the year, hiking and wild camping in Dartmoor and all the weather that comes with it, I thought it worth offering up a guide to the layering system and how best to adapt your layers to suit any outdoor condition. Read in browser » By Atlas & Boots on Jan 13, 2021 09:00 am Ten years ago, in my first job after graduation, I shared an office with a guy called Munir who I nicknamed Dr^2 because he not only had a PhD but was also qualified as a medical doctor. (I recognise it's not the wittiest name in the world but it was the best I could do at the time.) Munir loved learning British colloquialisms ("armchair critic", "fairweather friend"), played loud Arabic music while he worked and held a Jordanian passport. One day, he came into work clearly frustrated and announced that he was giving up on travelling. Stationed in the UK for three years, he thought he would have a great opportunity to see Europe while he was here. Alas, his passport was so restrictive that securing visas became distinctly Sisyphean. He as a doctor (twice over) had fewer rights than I did as a new grad just because of our passports.
