Our top Instagram shots of 2020

By Peter on Dec 30, 2020 09:20 am

Our final blog post of the year takes a look at our top Instagram shots of 2020

Kia has already ruminated on how 2020 has been, err, testing, to say the least. While there's no need to labour the point, it's worth highlighting that for those of us in the travel industry, this has been a particularly challenging year for us.

Atlas & Boots' top 10 posts of 2020

By Kia on Dec 23, 2020 09:00 am

Well, what can we say about 2020 that hasn't been said already? As a writer, I feel that I should be able to say something grand and stirring about the global pandemic, but to be honest, I can't. I don't know how to aptly describe the hopelessness and inertia of this extraordinary year.

Peter and I are relatively lucky. Our friends and family are healthy and we've both had some personal highlights: I published a book, wrote another and started Asian Booklist while Peter climbed his fourth seven summit, completed hikes in Germany and Croatia, and completed the 'microchallenge' of the 41 mountains in the Yorkshire Dales.

At the same time, we've seen our traffic plummet at Atlas & Boots, essentially choking our income. Our site – which we've worked on for six years – was suddenly and swiftly rendered expendable as travel ground to a halt.

Hiking in Latvia: where to find the best trails

By Peter on Dec 15, 2020 09:00 am

Hiking in Latvia is a wonderful way to explore the country's exceptionally unspoiled countryside of peaceful lakes, fairytale forests and sandy beaches

Latvia is perhaps best known for its cosmopolitan and clamorous capital, Riga. But beyond the 2014 European Capital of Culture, the delightful small towns of Sigulda and Cēsis are ideal launchpads for hiking, cycling, canoeing and other outdoor adventures.

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes that encouraged us to travel – with abandon – over the years. Maybe they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Now in its 11th year, the Travel Risk Map is an interactive map produced by security specialists at International SOS. It is used to predict the safest and most dangerous places to travel for the year ahead.
