Nomadic Matt's Book Club: October 2020 Update

Hey ConvenienceBigs,

Welcome to this month's book club newsletter!

I've read a lot of this past month. I started waking up in the morning in order to read so that the day never gets away from me. It's still it or miss (I mean mornings are sooooo early) but it's regular enough that I'm reading a lot more frequently again.

Here are this month's favorites:

Looking for Transwonderland  - I forget how I came across this book but it's been one of the best travel books I've read in recent memory. I absolutely love it. Written by Noo Saro-Wiwa, she returns to her homeland from London to learn more about her Nigerian heritage. It has vivid descriptions, engaging prose, and wonderful dialogue. It's hands down a must-read I loved it.

The Invisible Hook - This book is about the economics of pirates in the 1700s. It's not that long but it's a fascinating look at how pirates created constitutions, worker's compensation programs, governed themselves, used branding to minimize battles, and has just a lot of other interesting facts about pirates. Turns out, everything you think you know about pirates is just flat wrong. For something different, check this out.

Atomic Habits - This cultural bombshell of a book teaches us that small changes to our habits can create big results and helps us create the systems to make our goals happen. I really enjoyed it. It was a good reminder on how to structure your life for maximum pleasure (like waking up early to read).

Pale Rider -  While The Great Influenza gets all the hype, this other book on the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic tells the tale in a less academic and more human way, with more stories on the impact on people and communities.

See You in the Piazza - Frances Mayes is famous for sitting under the Tuscan sun and in this book she and her husband Ed take you off the tourist trail and around thirteen regions in Italy. Just as wonderfully written as Under the Tuscan Sun, I found this look at Italian food and culture inspiring, informative, and one that fills you with wanderlust.

Ten Years a Nomad -  And, finally, since I haven't mentioned it in a few months, if you haven't picked up a copy of my book, now's a great time to do so. My memoir follows my ten years backpacking the world and talks about the ups and downs of life as a permanent nomad.

For all my previously highlighted books, check out this page with all my favorites on Bookshop. We recently switched to a website called Bookshop. It's not as cheap as Amazon but the money helps small, independent bookstores rather than Amazon. If you buy any of the books from the links in this email, you'll be helping independent bookstores stay afloat!

(But, I also know it's Prime Day, so if you want an Amazon link, use this one.)

Until next month, happy reading.

Best,

Nomadic Matt
