Hey ConvenienceBigs,
Welcome to this month's book club! I hope you're doing well. I only have a short list this month as I spent a lot of time driving to Boston and, as someone who doesn't like audiobooks, thus didn't have a lot of time to read.
However, unlike in Texas, bookstores in Boston are open so I just picked up a stack of goodies I plan to devour. (Since I'm at my parent's house and there's not much to do, August's book list should be pretty long!)
Here's are this month's favorites:
The Great Influenza - A fascinating book on the 1918 flu pandemic. It goes into a lot of detail (in some spots a bit too much) and covers how the flu works, public health, and what happened. There's a lot of lessons we could learn as we battle COVID. Skip the entire first section though. It's a really boring section about the main scientists/doctors from the pandemic and not needed at all. After that, though, the book really picks up!
Stardust - I love this movie and, only after listening to Neil Gaiman's Masterclass, did I realize this was also a book that he wrote! I picked it up and devoured it in a few sittings. The prose kept me saying to myself "And then what happened?" In short, it's a very wonderful book that will keep you daydreaming about adventure.
Meeting Faith - Faith Adiele is a traveler writer and one of my favorite humans. She's super nice and a very talented writer. This book chronicles her life in Thailand becoming the first black Buddhist nun in the country. It's a remarkable book. ***

Until next month, happy reading.
Best,
Nomadic Matt
