Hey ConvenienceBigs,
Welcome to this month's book club! I've been devouring books lately after a large order from Amazon. (My local bookstore is still closed!) In fact, I now have to get another bookcase I have so many books.
Here's a list of some of my favorite reads as of late:
Andrew Carnegie – I love biographies. I mean why reinvent the life wheel when you can learn from the success and mistakes of others? Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish immigrant who dominated the steel industry to become one of the wealthiest people to ever live. (He'd be worth 262 billion in today's dollars.) Like most men of his era, he was a ruthless businessman but generous with his wealth. Do I think he was a good person? Not really. But his story is pretty interesting.
Nerve – Written by fellow travel writer, Eva Holland this book is about the science of fear. What causes it? How do we get over it? And how does it relate to adventure? Eva is one of my favorite writers and this is her first book. She knocks it out of the park with this one.
Tracks – This book follows Robin Davidson as she travels solo across the Australian outback in 1980. It was riveting and, as someone who has visited some of the places she went, a super interesting look at what they looked like long before I came through. A thrilling tale of grit and adventure, I was captivated from page one.
An Irreverent Curiosity – This book by David Farley, who co-teaches our writing class, is about his time in Italy searching for Jesus' foreskin. It was a holy relic that was lost to history. I reread it recently. It's funny, witty, and a lot of quirky characters. David really brings people and places to life in a way that makes you realize why he's considered one of the best in the biz. It's the kind of travel book that just makes you smile.
The Three-Body Problem Series – Some friends turned me onto this book series. It's a sci-fi series that involves a bunch of aliens, science, and human psychology. It is incredibly good. It's three books (I've finished two of them) and, while not travel, I highly recommend picking these up. I'm not usually into sci-fi but I loved the series so far. There's this terrifying concept of "a dark forest" that I haven't stopped thinking about. ***

Until next month, happy reading.
