I've been making changes to my life over the last couple of weeks. Faced with too much time on my hands, what did I do? It was definitely not all those things I said I would when I had time.
Instead, I mostly slept and argued with friends on Facebook. It turns out being at home only enables my bad habits. It's why I try to get out of my house and away from my computer as often as possible.
Lately, I started thinking about the concept of "the busy trap" again and how easy it is to fall into that.
The Coronavirus has given me a chance to realize something about myself that I never realized before because I was moving around so much.
How we're always on the move and rarely still our minds to reflect on the changes we should make in our lives.
And how it's time to do something about it.
AN UPDATE FROM THE TEAM With the travel industry at a standstill for the foreseeable future (I wouldn't make any early summer travel plans if I were you), things aren't too great for those in the travel industry.
We relied on book sales, affiliates, and ads before but no one is buying books or booking trips. So we're trying to adapt so we can continue to help you travel.
Because it's not just me here. There are five full-time employees that help keep this website and community humming along. This wouldn't exist without them.
We're still creating content, improving our guides, and hosting weekly calls and meet-ups.
If, over the years, you've enjoyed our content and were helped by our site, please consider becoming part of our Patreon.
For as little as $3, you'll get access to exclusive stories and pictures from trips I haven't written about before, free guides, free signed copies of my books, private live streams, 1-on-1 calls, our blogging course, and a bunch of other member perks.
This week I'll be doing a live Q&A and posting about a trip to Jordan I never talked about. Here's the link: https://www.patreon.com/nomadicmatt
We'll keep doing this when the crisis has passed too. We've had an awesome time doing it so don't worry thinking this is a temporary thing. It's not. It's forever.
THIS WEEK'S VIRTUAL MEET-UPS Until we can meet again in-person, we're hosting free virtual travel events for the community. We have four coming up:
FREE BLOGGING WEBINAR I'm running a free blogging webinar this week. It will last an hour and cover the big picture, guiding principles you should follow to succeed online. Plus, I'll also cover some specific tactics on getting followers, ranking in Google, and getting media features. There are two times:
COOL STUFF ON THE WEB 1. Adopt a Hostel - The hostel industry is really suffering right now. Hostels are labors of love and operate on slim margins. This initiative is designed to help hostels survive the current storm. Please check it out. Many small hostels will go under if this lasts a long time.
2. Is this the end of Airbnb? - As you know, I think it's become a platform for too many commercial real estate brokers. This Wired article is an interesting look at how this crisis might change Airbnb for the better.
