Travel to save the planet

View this email in your browser

Hey all,

The end of 2019 is upon us, and for many of us it's time to think about our resolutions for the decade the come. We who care about the outdoors and also love to travel may find ourselves in a conundrum, wondering how we can balance these passions. It turns out you can, and it's why 2020 should be the year you travel to save the planet.

Where you go makes a difference. Next time you go skiing, perhaps you should reward the resort that has been a leader in sustainability and calling for climate action. In fact, we have an entire guide dedicated to Aspen

Or check out the nation's newest national park, White Sands. As we reported earlier this year, it also happens to be the most dog-friendly outdoor place you could take your canine friend.

How you travel matters, too. If you happen to be a billionaire, maybe this hydrogen-powered superyacht is an option for you. If, on the other hand, you're walking or running, stop along the way to pick up some trash and clean up your community. You'll actually be partaking in a new fitness craze called "plogging." We tell you about plogging and many other sports we loved in 2019 and that you need to try in 2020

Here's to 2020!

ACTIVISM

Your 2020 resolution: Travel to save the planet

"Paradoxically, the right kind of travel — thoughtfully planned and executed and, at times, requiring long distance flights — can help combat the warming of our planet… By visiting biodiverse places under attack from governments and industry, we show those same people who want to mine, log, or develop biodiverse habitats that the land is economically viable through protection, not alteration."

MATADOR CITY GUIDE

TRIP PLANNING

The ultimate guide to Aspen

No ski town in America is at once as cosmopolitan and mountain chic as Aspen. This hub of 7,300 is the beating heart of Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley, blending end-of-the-highway seclusion with world-class culture, nightlife, and dining. It's bougie but so damn cool, with the chops to attract both movie stars and famous mountaineers to the same party - somehow unironically, and always with an extra splash of Veuve Clicquot.

Beyond city limits, towering 14,000-foot peaks and rugged mountain passes lure alpine adventurers from across the globe in all seasons, and the town's four - yes, four - ski resorts are as well-known for eco-friendly innovation as they are for unparalleled in-bounds and hike-to terrain. At first glance, Aspen is pricey and intimidating, but by chasing peaks and endless powder turns and hanging where the locals hang, a trip here can be done affordably. No matter the season, come with your best outdoor gear and your finest evening attire - because this town is all about the full experience.
