Learn to say ‘Happy New Year’ in 30 countries

View this email in your browser

Hello!

Missed it this week? Every Sunday, Matador gives you a second chance to read our most popular content.

2019 is nearly over and we miss it already.  But before we leave, we may have to say "Happy New Year" to our hosts in a far-flung country. Since nothing is more embarrassing than trying to mumble what you thought you heard after a well-watered new year's dinner, we present the essential guide on how to get through the moment.  Also, you apparently needed a holiday drink guide... yeah, right. More believable was the need to learn to pack for the occasion.

Some of our readers, on the other hand, seem to be over the holidays. The best places to go in February was a popular topic but, mostly, everyone seems to want to go live with a multi-millionaire in New Zealand. I guess that makes sense.

So, if you missed any of that, we invite you to check it out below.

How to say 'cheers' and 'Happy New Year' in 30 countries

Ringing in the new year is a call for celebration around the world. As the clock strikes midnight, friends, couples, and families call out cheers and well wishes for a happy New Year. The year turns over on the Western calendar first in Australia and then around the rest of the world. Some places celebrate with a toast of Champagne, others with a kiss on the cheek, and many with both. This is how the world says "Happy New Year" and offers a hearty cheers (when appropriate) for good measure.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Ultimate Guide to Boston

Steeped in history, rich in culture, and brimming with energy and diversity, Boston dishes up both vintage and newfangled charm. Historical landmarks dating to the first English settlers in 1630 stand alongside modern buildings of glass and steel. Immigrants helped build and still enrich Boston's many neighborhoods while students at its world-class universities infuse the city with zest, creativity, and talent. Superb local ingredients, like seafood from icy New England waters, form the backbone of many restaurant menus. Add a serious beer scene, hip cocktail bars, and a bounty of cafes, and there's no shortage of fuel to power a spin through Boston — a city brimming with superb museums, stellar sports teams, and super friendly locals.
