7 frequently asked questions on blogging

Hey ConvenienceBigs,

I sent an email a few days ago about the blogging course I offer, and some of you emailed me back asking questions I hadn't even thought about.

So I wanted to take a moment and answer them in one email to everyone answering them because they are important questions and knowing the answers can help you be a better blogger:

When will I make money from my blog?

There's no magic bullet for this, but you should plan on not making any money for at least a year. You may make it sooner than that (everyone is different), but riches don't happen overnight. This is a marathon, not a sprint. If you are looking to get rich quick, this thing probably isn't for you. If you want to make money for the rest of your life (and maybe find some fame), then you're in the right place. If you go in with that expectation, you won't get discouraged if you aren't rich right away and will be extra happy if you start making money sooner!

Are there any other added costs to your course?

There are many free website hosting services out there, but you technically don't own your content, and the provider could take it away from you if you "violate" their terms of service. Therefore, we strongly suggest that everyone buy a domain and hosting package. This means you own your own stuff, no one can take it from you, and you'll be treated more seriously by the world. A domain costs about $6 per year and a hosting package about $3 per month. Those will be your only additional costs. All other services are optional, as there's always free and paid versions of everything!

(Of course, you can always go with a free hosting website, but I don't recommend it.)

Do I need to be a tech wizard to succeed?

None. Most of the students in the program didn't start out a tech whiz. Heck, I knew NOTHING about websites when I started my blog. Zilch. This is a learning process, and we will teach you all the technical skills you need to know.

How much time will this take?

Time is such a scarce commodity. I heard from many of you that you were worried about the time commitment of the course and starting a blog. I won't lie. It does take some time. Magic won't make a blog appear (I wish it did). As long as you can devote at least three hours a week to start, you can succeed. PLUS, I discuss in depth how to manage your time and productivity — tips you can use for your entire life, really. I'll make you a time management ninja.

I'm worried my ideas are terrible.

My original blog posts were terrible. Like beyond terrible. Everything about my early ideas sucked. With time and practice, you'll get there but I'll help you hone your ideas, find your voice, tell your story, and get readers so you get there quicker.

Isn't there a lot of competition nowadays?

Not at all. There may be thousands of blogs, but there are only a handful of good ones. Just because a lot of people post photos of themselves on Instagram and call themselves a travel blogger doesn't mean they actually are! Don't worry about the "competition." They don't matter when you work to build something awesome.

There's free information online. Why should I care?

If all someone needed was the information, wouldn't everyone be a wild success? Why would we need doctors when we have WebMD? Mechanics when we have YouTube? Universities when we have podcasts?

I could read a book on gardening, but that doesn't mean I'd be a world-class gardener.

No, you need more than information. You need someone who can make sense of that information. Someone who can guide you, answer your questions, give advice, help you problem-solve, distill all this information, and speed up your success.

There's been a lot of trial and error that has gotten me where I am today. (And I didn't do it myself. I had mentors. No one rises to the top alone.)

If you're a time-starved person, spending weeks or months sorting through the free information online is not the best use of your time — and it's going to cause you to make lots of mistakes. Wouldn't you rather cut to the chase?

Don't waste your precious time. Let's help you develop a new plan for success.

Nomadic Matt
