Hey all, We hope everyone adjusted to the time change. In the Northern Hemisphere, that extra hour of sleep is great, but now darkness arrives an hour sooner. That's not a bad thing, if you love star gazing. We tell you which national parks are the place to check out the stars this winter, and which are the best dark sky destinations in the US. And, frankly, the darker skies just mean that all that we love about winter will soon be upon us. So get inspired by photographer Katie Botwin's striking images of Japan in winter. Or just get through the darkness of winter by daydreaming about, and planning ahead to spend time under, the midnight summer sun in the Yukon Territory. Be it winter, summer, or the seasons in between, the Outdoors are there for us to care for and enjoy. Finnish writer Jaana Kiesiläinen explains her country's idea of everyman's rights, which grant people very broad rights to explore the outdoors — and expect thoughtful stewardship in return. Environmental stewardship has always been central to Matador. This week, we covered news on how to make sure your clothing and gear are sustainable, controversial trophy hunting in Switzerland, and saving dingos in Australia. Keep an eye out for more environmental news and tips from us, and also look out for ski town guides coming up soon. In the meantime, we hope you find somewhere dark this weekend look up at that beautiful — hopefully cloudless and starlit — sky. Noelle Salmi, outdoor editor |
