The most chocolaty countries in the world

View this email in your browser

Hi all,

If you were asked which country sends the most chocolate out into the world, what would be your first guess? If you guessed anything but Germany, you'd be wrong. We dove into global chocolate export data to find the 10 most chocolaty countries, and some of the answers may surprise you (one that won't surprise you: Belgium). But it's not as simple as which country makes the most bars, truffles, and candies. We also dug a little deeper to find why those countries make the most chocolate, and exactly where the raw cocoa comes from.

Elsewhere in the world, assistant food and drink editor Elisabeth Sherman caught up with a rum distiller who's helping save Hawaii's heirloom sugarcane. Senior staff writer Matthew Meltzer recently paid tribute to the humble chicken strip and found why Miami is the best place to eat them. Writer Ana Bulnes explains everything you need to know about tapas, though there's an argument to be made that, tapas restaurant or not, you should always order starters. Finally, if you have an insatiable sweet tooth, these are the must-visit cities for chocolate lovers.

Enjoy the rest of your week and try to save some candy for the trick-or-treaters,

Nickolaus Hines, food and drink editor

Where to eat in Miami

It wasn't all that long ago that looking for a place to eat in Miami meant either shelling out a car payment to eat at a restaurant full of D-list celebrities or hitting a questionably sanitary cafeteria somewhere in Little Havana. But over the last decade or so, Miami has put itself squarely in the upper echelon of American food cities, with chefs from all over the world setting up outposts in South Florida. Now, the city is a lot more than just Cuban sandwiches (although there are still plenty of delicious Cuban sandwiches to be had). Miami is Thai tapas and fresh ceviche. It's prime steaks and modern Indian food. Whatever your taste — or budget — these are the must-hit restaurants while you're in Miami.
