Hey ConvenienceBigs,
Packing is always a major challenge for travelers.
I want to share the list of what I pack to give you a starting point as to what to pack for your own trip.
First, the short answer to what you should pack: as little as possible. I try to take only the essentials, and if I really need something, I buy it on the road. It's not that hard to find medicine, clothes, or an umbrella overseas.
The more I travel, the more I realize I don't need a lot of stuff. Everything I own fits into one bag and I never think, "Man, if I only I had X!"
Pack light and life will be good.
Here's a video of what to pack:
But the long answer to "Matt, what should I pack?" is my general suggested packing list below:
CLOTHES
1 dress shirt for when I go out to a respectable place in the evening
1 pair of jeans (heavy and not easily dried, but I like them; a good alternative is khaki pants)
1 pair of shorts
1 bathing suit
6 T-shirts
1 long-sleeved T-shirt
1 pair of flip-flops
1 pair of sneakers
8 pairs of socks (I always end up losing half)
7 pairs of boxer shorts (I'm not a briefs guy!)
TOILETRIES
1 toothbrush
1 tube of toothpaste
1 razor
1 package of dental floss
1 small bottle of shampoo
1 small bottle of shower gel
1 towel
Comb
Deodorant
SMALL MEDICAL KIT (safety is important!!!)
Band-Aids
Hydrocortisone cream
Antibacterial cream
Eyedrops
Earplugs
Doctor-prescribed antibiotics
Tylenol
Hand sanitizer (germs = sick = bad holiday)
GEAR (for those blogging, taking video, or anything else)
Laptop
Camera
iPhone
Tripod
Wireless microphones
MISCELLANEOUS
A key or combination lock (safety first)
Zip-lock bags (keeps things from leaking or exploding)
Plastic bags (great for laundry)
Universal charger/adaptor (this applies to everyone)
FOR FEMALE TRAVELERS
I'm not a woman so I don't know what a woman wears, but Kristin Addis, who writes our solo female travel column, wrote this list as an addition to the basics above:
Clothing
1 swimsuit
1 sarong
1 pair of stretchy jeans (they wash and dry easily)
1 pair of leggings (if it's cold, they can go under your jeans, otherwise with a dress or shirt)
2-3 long-sleeve tops
2-3 T-shirts
3-4 spaghetti tops
1 light cardigan
Toiletries
1 dry shampoo spray & talc powder (keeps long hair grease free in between washes)
1 hairbrush
Makeup you use
Hair bands & hair clips
Feminine hygiene products (you can opt to buy there too, but I prefer not to count on it, and most people have their preferred products)
(For an even more detailed list for female travelers, check out this blog post here by our solo female travel expert.)
I've made these lists into PDFs for you to easily download, print, and check off as you pack. Click the image to download them, print them out, and use them when you pack:
I'm sure many of you will read this and say "But what about X?" or "You really don't need Y."
Everyone has a different list.
This is just my suggested list.
If you are doing a lot of hiking, you'll need lighter pants, not jeans.
Or maybe you never plan to go somewhere nice, so you can ditch the "nice" clothes. Or maybe you're camping and you need camping gear.
Tailor your list to suit your travels!
Just remember the cardinal rule: pack light!
If you have any questions, reply to this email and ask! I'm here to help!
Sincerely,
Nomadic Matt
