Exploring the wild, remote Faroe Islands in a car

Hey all!

Welcome to our first weekly newsletter focused solely on the outdoors, an area of travel that's been central to Matador from day one. Whether you're planning an adventure-packed trip, enjoy keeping up on the latest sports trends, or just want to add more outdoor time to your life -- at home or on the road -- we're here to keep you informed.

Interest in the coldest corners of the planet is exploding, which is understandable given their sadly ephemeral nature these days. Late last week, our staff writer Eben Diskin shared his experiences in western Greenland. This week, Eben tells us how to road trip around the Faroe Islands.

You'll spot plenty of marine life in those North Atlantic islands, among them whales and dolphins. Dolphin tours are becoming more popular, and we tell you the best places around the world to ethically view dolphins.

For a warm weather escape, we share how to explore the Turkish coastline by boat. Closer to home, our own Alex Bresler helps us understand the differences between the US's incredible national parks and protected areas, and assistant outdoor editor Tim Wenger gives us the most complete mountain biking gear list you could ever need. And if you want to take your dog camping, here's how.

Enjoy the weekend and get outside!

Noelle Salmi, outdoor editor

ROAD TRIPS

Island hopping by car in the wild Faroe Islands

"If you talk to enough Faroese people, you'll quickly learn that everyone has a "favorite island." For many, that island is Suðuroy. Getting to Suðuroy, the southernmost island in the archipelago, requires a bit more commitment -- as the ferry ride from Torshavn is about two hours long. You'll be glad you did, though, as it may be the most remote island you'll visit."

MATADOR CITY GUIDE

TRIP PLANNING

The Ultimate Guide to Manchester Nature and Parks

Manchester's industrial fathers may have given it tons of architectural character, but they also paved over all the green shoots and pushed the parks to the outskirts. Yet although there are just a few green spaces in the city center, leafy river walks and manicured parks are just a short tram or bus ride away. A little further out, the options expand into the lush grounds of stately homes and hilly rambles that end in country pub food and well-earned pints. Here's a guide to some of the best natural features on offer in and around Manchester.
