A Time Travel Turtle Guide

There are a few places in the world that I would say you must visit during your lifetime. One of them is the incredible Incan city of Machu Picchu in Peru.

But, at the same time, it would be a mistake to think that's all Peru offers. It's an incredible country, full of adventure, with some amazing experiences - even things like drinking frog juice (you can see from the photo what my reaction to that was).

The reason I'm writing to you about Peru today is that there's a huge flash sale at the moment for tours in the country, including treks to Machu Picchu. BUT IT ENDS ON OCTOBER 24!

If you've ever dreamed of hiking the Inca Trail, exploring ancient cities, cruising in the Amazon... this may be your chance to grab a bargain.

When I visited Peru a few years ago, I did a tour to Machu Picchu that wasn't along the standard Inca Trail. It was called the Lares Trek and it took an alternative route through more dramatic landscapes and small communities. I loved it because there were so few other trekkers, you felt like you had it all to yourself.

It is one of the tours that's on sale with G Adventures at the moment and I would recommend you check it out.

As you may know, I am a 'G Wanderer', meaning I work with G Adventures to showcase some of their tours. But I'm not being biased when I tell you that the company is particularly famous for its trips in Peru.

One of the reasons it's the top operator in the region is because of the way it works with local guides for the tours - and even supports opportunities for their families, like the Ccaccaccollo Women's Weaving Collective.

I've also spent a lot of time in Peru exploring independently, and I'm amazed by the depth of culture in the country. We often only think of the Incas but there were lots of civilisations before that.

It began as early as 2600 BC, when pyramids were built at Caral-Supe near Lima. There was also Chavin de Huantar, where the nobility would take hallucinogenic drugs and do human sacrifices. And there was the Nazca civilisation that drew enormous shapes in the desert that you can still see from the sky.

I would suggest having a look at some of my stories from Peru to get some inspiration for your trip there. I've also got some tips on how to do things independently.

Or, of course, click the banner below to see the tours that are on sale. But a warning: THE SALE ENDS ON 24 OCTOBER!!

Meanwhile, here are a few more of my favourite experiences from Peru:

Trekking higher than ever before

With one of the highest mountains outside of Asia and ever-changing scenery, Huascaran National Park is a hidden gem of Peru.

Peru's creepy mummies

At this creepy cemetery near the Nazca Lines, you can still see the bodies of people buried here… 2000 years ago!!

The heart of the Incas

The city of Cusco, high in the Andes, was once the heart of the Incan culture... until the Europeans arrived...

There are lots of new stories coming on the blog in the next few weeks, so stay tuned,

When I travel internationally, I always get insurance. It's not worth the risk, in case there's a medical emergency or another serious incident. I recommend you should use World Nomads for your trip.
