David Chang’s latest show proves we don’t need a ‘new’ Anthony Bourdain

Hi all,

For many Americans, Anthony Bourdain was a portal to the rest of the world. No one has yet filled the role he played in food and travel, and it's likely no one ever will. But maybe that's ok. In the Netflix show Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, which premieres on October 23, David Chang offers a new type of show that's similarly focused on travel through the lens of food -- it's just a different lens. Assistant food and drink editor Elisabeth Sherman got an early look. Here's what she found.

In Italy, it's arguably the best time of year for food lovers. Case in point: truffles, chestnuts, and all sorts of food festivals. Meanwhile, in the United States, it's candy corn season. We caught up with psychologists for insight on why the candy is so divisive. Lastly, if you're looking for a good cup of coffee on your late season camping trips, take some advice from the experts.

Enjoy the rest of your week and embrace all the food the season has to offer,

Nickolaus Hines, food and drink editor

David Chang's latest show proves we don't need a 'new' Anthony Bourdain

David Chang shouldn't have to be the new Anthony Bourdain; he should just be himself. Both build friendships and foster intimacy through food, and they seem to share an insatiable curiosity — to learn, to eat, to explore. They are both superb interviewers too, able to draw out the most fascinating details from their subjects. There might be a fair comparison to be made between the two men, but Chang gracefully differentiates himself from his predecessor.

Where to eat in Kiev

Kiev does not live on borscht alone. The Ukraine saw plenty of stereotypical and corny restaurants pop up in the 1990s, and the early 2000s were the years of chain pizzerias. Now, a new generation of eateries is popping up. Some are mono cafes that tweak one dish to perfection; others play with international flavors and reinvent old recipes. And then there are the brunch spots that cater to the young and hip crowd, as well as restaurants serving cuisines from parts of the world that are largely underrepresented in the restaurant scene in the West.

One major bonus is that, while average-to-pricey by Kiev standards, many of the top restaurants offer quality food at a lower price than you'd find in Western Europe or the US. In other words, Kiev's food scene can surprise you. Below are some of the most interesting (and delicious) restaurants in Kiev's popular neighborhoods, whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert.
