Memorial Day Flash Sale: 6 MONTHS FOR 99¢ |
Today's starting lineup
Since he made his first start for the Astros in September 2017, Justin Verlander has defied Father Time. On Friday night in Oakland, he joined some of baseball's greatest names. Verlander passed Greg Maddux and moved into the top 10 on the all-time strikeouts list, another milestone reached in Houston for the future Hall of Famer. That helped pace the Astros to a win over the A's in the opener of their seven-game road trip.
While the major league team was out west, José Abreu played his first game for Triple-A Sugar Land during his minor league assignment, and the veteran first baseman appears poised to join the Astros next week in Seattle. The news isn't as good for right-hander José Urquidy, who departed his rehab start for the Space Cowboys with what was termed "elbow discomfort."
After three seasons, former Astros star Lance Berkman resigns as Houston Christian's baseball coach.
UH basketball season ticket holders will be paying more once again to watch one of the nation's top teams.
Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko embraces the "spotlight" that comes with ESPN's "College Gameday" coming to College Station for the season opener against Notre Dame, one of his previous employers.
Kingwood completes the upset and sweeps Katy, the nation's top-ranked softball team, to earn a berth in the Class 6A state tournament.
Stat of the day: 132. Strikeouts Justin Verlander needs to catch Walter Johnson (3,509) for ninth on the all-time list.
