Play-cation: Houston high school baseball teams stay active during spring break

Not everybody was able to pick up and leave for a spring break destination this week.

Although there was a break from the classroom setting for a week, many Houston-area high school athletes have plenty to accomplish on the field.

Look no further than the Clear Lake baseball team

The Falcons can ill afford a break as they've got something good going.

Clear Lake sports a 16-1-3 record and is turning heads before its District 24-6A schedule begins Tuesday. The Falcons defeated Manvel in a non-district extra-innings thriller Wednesday.

Coach Josh Bromberg's squad has been grinding out wins for a month now. Clear Lake picked up notable victories over Clements and La Porte, while its only loss came against perennial power Friendswood.

Clear Lake tied for fifth in its district last season with a 4-8 record and missed the playoffs.

"We have 17 seniors, and even the younger guys have been here before," Bromberg said. "We lost a couple pieces to graduation, but even the guys that moved up from the junior varsity are playing big roles in what we do."

Over at Kingwood, the Mustangs have been winning at a good pace under new head coach Michael Oros.

Oros, a Kingwood alum and former Sam Houston State pitcher, became head coach the day before the school year started. He spent the previous decade as an assistant for the Mustangs.

"There's a lot that goes into this position," Oros said. "It has taken some time to get used to how to do things but, when fifth and seventh period come around, it's time to coach baseball and work with our guys. It's home, and this feels natural. Our tradition has always been to 'Protect the K,' and that isn't going to change."
