Fort Bend County celebrates Women's History Month

In honor of Women's History Month in March, various museums, libraries, and historical societies are hosting events to go alongside reading lists and educational articles about Houston women.

Here's what's happening in our community this month.

The Women of Three pop-up exhibit at the Fort Bend Museum showcases three historical women whose impact resonates across the United States through art. Artists Shirley Beyer, Brenda Bowman and Susan Salter have dedicated the exhibit to impactful women who may not know how much they changed the lives of other women. The exhibit will be on display from March 11 to April 12.

On March 22, the Sienna Branch Library will host a public screening of the PBS documentary "Daring Women Doctors," which explores the stories of women physicians and nurses from the 19th century.

Openings and Closings

After 12 years in operation, Guru Burgers and Crepes, a locally-owned Sugar Land restaurant, will close its doors on April 21, as announced in a recent Facebook post.

"As we reflect on this journey, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the cherished moments, great food, and the sense of community that you, our patrons, have brought to our establishment," the statement said, adding that any Guru gift cards will be fully honored at their sister restaurants—Jupiter, Japaneiros, and Ginger Mule—without any loss of value.

Guru Burgers is located at 2268 Texas Drive.

Shout Out

This is a little random, but we're pleased to highlight that any national recognition Fort Bend County receives. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem made a new video touting her experience at Smile Texas, a Sugar Land clinic focused on cosmetic dentistry.

"For years I have needed to have an adjustment to my teeth from a biking accident and they (Smile Texas) have been absolutely phenomenal," Noem said

One last thing ...

Our colleague Shakari Briggs reports that Texas Parks and Wildlife has identified at least 10 types of rattlesnakes in the Lone Star State, all of which are present in the Houston area. As temperatures rise, the poisonous pit vipers become more active. Make sure to check out Shakari's coverage for essential information on staying safe.
